Sometimes Lee starts with a sketch, but he tends to modify it spontaneously once he begins throwing the clay on his potter’s wheel, so the sketch never looks like the finished piece anyway. After the vases, bowls, or other forms are left to harden, he might incise the clay with patterns or other details before the first phase of firing.

“If you collect all the yellow leaves of a tree and compare them, there are no such thing as same shape nor same color,” says Lee, emphasizing the need for maintaining variety and regional styles in the celadon tradition. He adds: “Likewise, diversity delights us and makes the surroundings flourish. To prevent life becoming simple and dull, we need to face new challenges and make diverse attempts. Shouldn’t keeping and developing Goryeo celadon be part of it?”

Lee follows the traditional ways, but he creates work that is uniquely his own. He views celadon as a living and breathing practice that continues to grow and mature. There is advantage in tradition, he says, because it represents hundreds of years of accumulated knowledge. But under his motto of “mastering the old to create the new,” Lee departs from his predecessors by experimenting with color both in the Goryeo clay body and in the glaze, rather than prizing consistency. And unlike the tall vases and Buddhist motifs of the potters before him, who strived for perfection through balance and proportion, Lee’s work draws from the imperfections and diversity in nature through playful asymmetry and unrestrained experimentation. His work is tied to tradition, but this experience of letting go, he says, has helped to forge his own identity as an artist working today.
